Prison Aid and Action Research

Current Grantee |

PAAR advocates for Open Prisons, a reformatory model that promotes life in a fully
functional social environment, focusing on reformation and re-integration instead of retributive
punishment. Their work includes research on prison manuals, court judgements, government
notifications, and field research on prison conditions. PAAR works closely with the High court,
CMs office, Police Headquarters, and the Prison departments of states to improve the
conditions of prisons, even creating material for the training of judicial officers and personnel
from prisons and correctional systems.

What excites us about their work:

  • Focused on an extremely under-served population and issue in the country – undertrials and convicts
  • Work through them channels money into an area that is systematically underfunded and ignored
  • Work based on research from prison statistics and the criminal justice system across the country to appeal to a civic understanding of how to build a humane and transparent system
  • Use of narratives and public interest journalism to help build an understanding of the complexity of prison-judiciary systems.
  • Using non-partisan narratives and creating coalitions between state actors and citizens.
